解説

東京藝術大学油画科で副手の頃の油彩画。アトリエ内の混沌とした空間に横たわる少女の黄色の衣服が、青基調の画面に映える。この頃の絹谷は、重層的なイメージ空間から形態を探り出す制作スタイルで、作品はまさに格闘の痕跡が集積されたかのように重々しく流動的である。
絹谷が所属する独立美術協会はフォービスム（野獣派）を謳った団体であり、当時は激情的な描写が主流を占めていた。その中で最も注目されていた若手が、他ならぬ絹谷幸二であった。

Commentary

This oil painting was made when Kinutani worked as an assistant at the Oil Painting Department at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. A young girl stretches out her body in a somehow chaotic-looking atelier. Her yellow dress glows brightly against the blue background. During this age, Kinutani’s creations followed the process of shaping a form from multiple layers of images. This work, which is heavy yet flowing, reflects the artist’s creative battle.
The Dokuritsu Fine Arts Society, which Kinutani belongs, is known for promoting fauvism. Passionate expressions dominated the group during this period. Koji Kinutani was seen as the most promising young artist from the society.
