解説

イタリア留学間もなく絹谷を待ち受けていたのは、キリストを信じるか信じないかを問う「イエス・オア・ノー」の思考である。明快・明晰を第一義とする人生観でもあり、曖昧さを否定するものだ。しかしながら、相対するものを共に認める「不二法門」の教えを培っていた絹谷にとって、この二者択一は最後まで馴染めなかったという。向かい合う二人の口から流れ出る様々な形態、言葉の絡み合いを具現化したのが本作である。

Commentary

When he began his studies in Italy, Kinutani was confronted with the question if he believed in Christianity or not. This western “Yes or No” mentality, which prioritizes clarity and leaves no space for ambiguity, was difficult for Kinutani to take in, for he was raised with the philosophy of “Funihomon” which accepts the co-existence of contradicting things. In this painting, two figures face each other. Words and shapes flow out of each figure’s lips and intertwine with one another.

去意大利留学不久，等待绢谷幸二的，是确定是否信奉基督的“Yes or No”的思考。这也是一种以明快、明晰为第一义的人生观，而且是否定模棱两可的。但是，对于已经服膺同时承认互相对立之事物的“不二法门”教义的绢谷幸二而言，直到最后他也未能适应这种两者择一。从相对视的二个人口中所说出的种种形态、言辞的纠葛，经过形象化，便是我们眼前看到的这幅画了。
