解説

昭和時代の懐かしいモチーフを描き込んだ絹谷の記憶の玉手箱。「戦争の時代は終わり、時はめぐり、作業服を着たペコちゃんと私は幸福」と、平安の尊さを伝える。絹谷の生家は昭和前期まであった高級料亭で、当時は政治家から文人墨客が集い文化論に花を咲かせ、芸妓衆の音曲芸能を楽しむ社交場でもあった。フランスの文化相アンドレ・マルローも訪れている。幼少時から一流の文化人達の姿を目に焼き付けて来た早熟の少年は、いつしか自分の落ち着ける居場所を求め、孤独を癒してくれる玩具を心の友としてこよなく愛したのである。

Commentary

This is a treasure box of Kinutani’s memories from the Showa era. The artist comments, “War is finished, time has passed, and Peko-chan in overalls and I am happy.” Kinutani was born in a high-class Japanese restaurant that ran its business until the early Showa era. Politicians, writers and artists gathered at the restaurant to engage in heated discussions about culture and enjoy the performances by the geishas. France’s minister of cultural affairs, André Malraux, was amongst the visitors of this restaurant. Growing up in such an environment, the young Kinutani searched for a place where he could feel comfortable, and eventually found a toy that became the healer of his childhood loneliness.
